Conversational AI Engineer

AIApply is looking for a remote Conversational AI Engineer in the United States to build the interview-practice and chatbot experiences that help candidates land jobs. You will design and ship conversational agents that conduct realistic mock interviews, answer product questions, and guide users through complex application flows. That means real work on dialogue state management, tool calling, streaming responses, voice input and output, latency tuning and graceful failure handling — not just wiring up a chat box. You will work closely with product and design on conversation design, then own the engineering: prompt architecture, function/tool schemas, guardrails, hallucination mitigation, transcript analytics and A/B experimentation. Our agents talk to real job seekers at emotionally high-stakes moments, so quality, tone and safety matter as much as throughput. The team is small, senior and fully distributed across US time zones. You will ship to production in your first two weeks.

Responsibilities Build multi-turn conversational agents with tool calling, memory and streaming responses. Own conversation design implementation, guardrails and safety filtering. Integrate speech-to-text and text-to-speech for voice interview practice. Instrument transcripts, build evaluation sets and run A/B experiments on prompts. Reduce end-to-end latency and cost per conversation. Collaborate with design on tone, persona and error recovery flows.

Qualifications 4+ years of software engineering, including 1+ year shipping LLM-powered chat or voice products. Strong TypeScript/Node or Python. Comfortable with streaming APIs, WebSockets, function calling and structured output. Product sense and an eye for conversational UX. Required Must be authorised to work in the United States.
