A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is an engineer who works inside a customer's environment, building and shipping AI systems on their stack rather than on the vendor's roadmap. The role was popularized by Palantir and has been adopted across AI-native companies: you scope the problem with the customer, write production code against their data, and carry what you learn back into the product. It differs from an AI Solutions Engineer in ownership. Solutions Engineers support a sale; FDEs own delivery, often embedding with one account for months. Listings ask for strong general engineering, comfort with ambiguity, and unusual tolerance for customer-facing work.
As of October 2026, AgenticCareers tracks 206 open Forward Deployed Engineer positions across 64 companies. The median advertised salary is $180K–$288K per year (based on 87 listings with disclosed pay). 14% of roles are remote. The most active employers are Salesforce, OpenAI, LangChain.
