The debate about whether AI is destroying entry-level jobs usually runs on two kinds of evidence: macro studies and anecdotes. We can add a third: the live inventory of a job board that tracks nothing but agentic AI roles. If any corner of the economy should show what happens to junior work when companies build around AI, it is the companies building the AI. The answer in our data is stark.
The outside data first
The World Economic Forum, drawing on Revelio Labs research, reports that entry-level job postings in the US fell about 35% in 18 months, with AI a major driver. Employment for US workers aged 22 to 25 in the jobs most exposed to AI is down 16% since late 2022, and globally more than a third of young workers now sit in occupations with medium or high exposure to AI-driven task change. The WEF frames the risk precisely: it is not only the lost junior jobs, it is the damage to the pipeline that produces tomorrow's senior people.
The most useful sentence in that whole body of research is a reframe: AI does not take the entry-level job, it takes the entry-level task. Routine execution, the data entry, first-draft code, and ticket triage that junior roles were built from, is what the models absorb. What happens to the role depends on whether the employer rebuilds it around new tasks or deletes it.
What 1,754 live agentic listings show
Across the full corpus of live agentic AI roles we track (n=1,754 on 3 August 2026), the seniority distribution looks like this:
- Intern: 21 roles (1.2%)
- Junior: 16 roles (0.9%)
- Mid-level: 794 roles (45.3%)
- Senior: 400 roles (22.8%)
- Staff / Principal: 317 roles (18.1%)
- Lead / Manager / Director: 152 roles (8.7%)
- Executive: 54 roles (3.1%)
Entry-level work, interns plus juniors combined, is 2.1% of the market. For every open entry-level agentic role there are about 25 that ask for senior experience or above. And the composition of that 2.1% matters: a third of the internships are explicitly research positions asking for PhD or Masters enrollment, which are a pipeline into research labs, not into industry engineering. The junior openings that do exist cluster where the work is newest: 11 of the 37 are AI Agent Engineer roles, where nobody has ten years of experience because the discipline is barely three years old.
How to read that honestly
Two caveats before drawing conclusions. First, this is a snapshot of one specialized corpus, not the whole economy; agentic AI companies are small, young, and disproportionately hire people who can work unsupervised, which depresses the junior share relative to mature industries. Second, our seniority classification reads job titles, so a role that is junior in practice but untitled will be counted as mid-level. Both caveats cut in the same direction: the true entry-level share might be somewhat higher than 2.1%, but nothing about the shape of the distribution changes.
What the snapshot confirms is the task reframe. The companies most fluent in AI have not rebuilt junior jobs around agent supervision at any scale yet. They hire mid-level and senior people who already know how to own outcomes, and they leave the traditional apprenticeship layer, the tasks AI now does, unstaffed. The pipeline concern the WEF raises is visible in our data as a simple ratio: 25 to 1.
What to do if you are trying to break in
The strategy that follows from this data is not "apply to more entry-level listings," because there are 37 of them. It is to stop competing for the label and start competing for the work:
- Target the newest categories, not the oldest. Junior openings concentrate in AI Agent Engineer because seniority barely exists there. A category where the maximum possible experience is three years is the closest thing to a level playing field this market offers.
