The Opportunity

Searchability is recruiting for an innovative, high-growth technology company looking to hire a Staff Applied AI Engineer to lead the development of intelligent, AI-powered products.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a product-focused engineering team building real-world AI applications that combine large language models, intelligent agents and sophisticated automation.

We're looking for an exceptional engineer who combines deep software engineering expertise with hands-on experience designing, developing and deploying production-grade AI systems.

This isn't a research-only position. You'll be responsible for taking AI products from initial concept through to production, solving complex engineering challenges and helping shape the technical direction of the business.

What You'll Be Doing

• Architect, develop and deploy production-grade AI applications using Python, LLMs and modern AI frameworks.
• Build intelligent AI agents with tool calling, structured outputs, multi-step workflows and API integrations.
• Design and implement agentic AI systems using LangChain, LangGraph or similar technologies.
• Take ownership of AI development from initial prototyping through to deployment, monitoring and optimisation.
• Build evaluation frameworks to measure AI quality, reliability, safety and performance.
• Optimise AI systems for scalability, latency, accuracy and cost efficiency.
• Develop backend services, APIs and integrations supporting AI-powered products.
• Work closely with product, engineering and leadership teams to identify high-impact AI opportunities.
• Make key architectural decisions and establish best practices for AI engineering.
• Provide technical mentorship and help shape the long-term AI engineering strategy.

What We're Looking For

• Extensive commercial experience in Software Engineering, Applied AI Engineering or Machine Learning Engineering, operating at Senior or Staff level.
• Excellent hands-on Python engineering skills, with experience building scalable production systems.
• Proven experience designing and deploying LLM-powered applications in production.
• Strong experience with LangChain, LangGraph or similar agent orchestration frameworks.
• Experience building AI agents, tool/function calling systems and complex automated workflows.
• Strong understanding of prompt engineering, RAG, structured outputs and LLM evaluation.
• Experience with asynchronous Python, REST APIs, streaming protocols and backend architecture.
• Strong knowledge of AI observability, monitoring, testing and evaluation frameworks.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP or Azure.
• Ability to independently own complex technical projects and make high-impact architectural decisions.
• Strong product mindset and experience working in fast-moving engineering environments.
• Based in the continental United States.

Nice to Have

• Previous experience as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer or technical lead.
• Experience building AI-native products within a startup or scale-up.
• Experience with Langfuse, OpenTelemetry, Pydantic or similar tools.
• Familiarity with LLM-as-a-judge evaluation, automated scoring and AI safety frameworks.
• Experience with AWS Bedrock, Docker, Terraform or Kubernetes.
• Experience with multimodal AI, personalisation or recommendation systems.
• Experience mentoring engineers and establishing technical standards.
• Background in consumer technology, health technology or other data-driven product environments.
